The Course Camarguaise is not a blood sport

Raseteurs (scrapers) compete to outrun bulls and snatch cocardes (tassels) from between their horns. Prize money goes up as local sponsors add to the pot. Races last 5-20 minutes, after which the bull returns to its pen amidst great ceremony. The star of the show is the bull, and many become local legends. Parisian efforts to ban this practise were met with fierce resistance. The bull is the king of The Camargue and central to local identity.
